Ofsted Shenfield Day Nursery

Ofsted praises nursery for embedding a “culture of respect and kindness” and for making children feel “safe and valued”

Shenfield Day Nursery is delighted with the outcome of its latest Ofsted inspection, which confirmed that the nursery consistently delivers strong standards across key areas of provision.

The report praised the nursery’s strong approach to behaviour, attitudes and routines, noting high expectations for all children. Staff were praised as being positive role models and the nursery having an embedded culture of respect and kindness. Inspectors observed children behaving impeccably, supporting one another, and
developing strong emotional awareness with the help of skilled practitioners. Effective strategies, such as clear routines and turn-taking tools, help children manage their behaviour.

Children’s achievement, welfare and well-being were judged to meet the expected standard. Inspectors noted that children make “secure progress across a broad and balanced curriculum”, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Staff were also observed as creating a “language rich environment supporting children tolearn and use new words”. Further praise for the nursery team who support children to be curious and inquisitive with opportunities to problem solve how to do things.

Inspectors praised how children are encouraged to pour drinks and self-serve salad to accompany their meal, whilst staff sit with them, engaging in conversations about their day at school.

A wide variety of breakfast options are available each day at the club including: toasted muffins; pancakes and fresh fruit. The club’s teatime menus include a variety of freshly prepared hot meals such as quiches, baked potatoes, pasta dishes or fish cakes. Every effort is made to provide for special diets if required.

In the report, the inspectors also highlighted the priority given by staff to ensure the children’s emotional well-being is supported.

The report states, “All children, including the very youngest, demonstrate they feel safe and secure…The very youngest children are independent but seek help and reassurance when needed.”

A key strength of the club lies in its relationships with both children and parents. Ofsted noted how the experienced staff strive to make the introduction to the club as happy and successful as possible, building relationships with both children and their families to help the settling in process and beyond.

A strong emphasis on healthy lifestyles, outdoor activity, and independence was also highlighted.
