Mountnessing Ofsted

Staff at Mountnessing Breakfast & After School Club are celebrating following their recent Ofsted inspection.

It took place on 8 December 2022 and met the quality and standards of early years provision. Ofsted judge and grade Breakfast and After School Clubs by awarding them Met Standards grading (if successful) which differs to nursery and school inspection grades.

The inspection gave staff the opportunity to showcase how much support they give each child to progress in their learning and development.

Our Breakfast and After School Club Manager, Helen, said: “We are over the moon to have been recognised for our hard work and efforts. The team work endlessly to ensure that the children are happy and supported in a welcoming and positive environment. The children and families are truly at the very heart of everything we do. We have built positive relationships with both the school and the local community and are keen to embed our- selves within the Mountnessing community.”

High expectations

Inspectors highlighted how the children “are happy and enjoy” attending the club, the strong partnerships between staff and parents which “help children settle from the outset” and the “strong, supportive links with the host school.”

The report said: “Staff work hard to make sure that children feel valued and respected. They involve the children when deciding appropriate rules for the club… and have high expectations of children’s behaviour.”

Inspectors also reported how staff create an inclusive environment, where diversity is respected. For example, staff make use of current events, such as the football World Cup, to teach children about people from different countries around the world. “They are good role models”, the report states.

Mealtimes have also been praised in the Ofsted report. Inspectors were impressed by these social occasions, “where children show confidence in speaking and listening and demonstrate this as they sit together to talk about things that are important to them.”

The club is managed by Shenfield Day Nursery, in Brentwood, and operates from a bespoke wooden clad building within the grounds of Mountnessing C of E Primary School.

Each child is encouraged to engage with the natural world and the club makes full use of its fantastic outdoor space and school facilities. This includes a large playing field, woodland areas for forest school fun, age-appropriate playground equipment and a large garden gazebo to support outdoor learning.

The report states: “Children have lots of opportunities for energetic outdoor play in the forest school area. This has a positive impact on their good health and understanding of the benefits of following an active lifestyle.”

Mountnessing Breakfast & After School Club is open Monday to Friday during term time. Sessions run from 7.30am to 9am and 3.15pm to 6pm.

This was the first routine inspection the club has received since opening in May 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shenfield Day Nursery is proud to have been providing high quality day care for children within the Shenfield area for over 20 years.

Shenfield Day Nursery have also operated a Breakfast and After School Club at their sister school, St. Mary’s C of E Primary School in Shenfield, for the past 7 years. The nursery began offering this service to the families at Mountnessing school in May 2021. Both clubs are led by inspiring early years manager.
